Mental health during COVID: Tips for ILAC students, staff and teachers

This Saturday, October 10th isย World Mental Health Day,ย whichย aims toย raise awareness in the global community about mental health.ย ย

ย

Taking care of yourย body and mindย is always important, but especially duringย COVID.ย The pastย severalย months have brought manyย newย challenges, such asย adapting toย studying and workingย from home, limitedย social interactions and an uncertain future.ย Here areย 5 things thatย youย can do to take care ofย yourย mental health during COVID:ย

Mental Health During Covid - ILAC International College

Selfย -care.ย

Takeย care of your bodyย byย eatingย healthy,ย well-balancedย meals. Exercise regularly, get plenty of sleepย andย reduceย yourย consumption of alcohol and drugs.ย Try yoga,ย deep breathing techniques and meditation for stress relief.ย Most of all,ย be kind to yourself and allow yourself to feel your emotions rather than bottle them up.ย

ย

Connect with others.ย

Talkย with your loved ones and people you trust about how you are feeling. Chatting withย friends andย classmatesย onlineย can leadย to deeper connections and friendships. Remember, you are not alone!ย ILAC partnerย guard.me International Insuranceย provides freeย mental healthย webinarsย every monthย for students and educatorsย forย support and guidance. Register to attend this Saturday atย guard.me CARES.ย

ย

Set a schedule for school, workย and lifeย balance.ย

Maintain a consistent routineย whichย includes sleep-wake times, exercise,ย workย andย school schedules. It can be easy to do schoolwork all day because it feels like there is nothing else to do, but followingย a routine will help youย create a sense of normalcy. Take regular breakย andย get aย clear understanding of expectationsย forย assignments, course work,ย examsย and projects.ย

ย

Create happy habits.ย

Whatย usually helps you when you are in a difficult and stressful period of your life?ย It can be as simple asย going for a run,ย enjoying food you like,ย listening to yourย favourite music orย watching a movie.ย Treat yourself with feel-good activities thatย canย help you feel motivated and uplifted.ย

ย

Physical exercise.ย

Moving your body, whether it is a fast walk or long stretch has an immediate effect on your mood. Studies show that physical exercise increases dopamine, which is the โ€˜feel-goodโ€™ hormone in your body. Take a stroll in the park or do some jumping jacks in your room toย get a boost inย happiness and hope.ย This weekend,ย join international students and colleagues from around the world at theย ILAC Virtual Run, taking place onย Saturday, October 10th.ย

ย

Itโ€™sย okayย not to feelย okayย –ย itโ€™sย normalย toย sometimes feelย scared, confused, anxious,ย lonely or even angry.ย Focus on taking care of yourselfย andย ask for helpย from โ€“ we are all in this together!ย
