ILAC update on COVID in Canada:

Ontario to vaccinate 8.5 million people by end of June

December 29, 2020

From the desk of Jonathan Kolber

The Ontario government has announced that it expects to vaccinate 8.5 million people by the end of June against COVID-19.

This is very good news for our sector and we are very proud that our premier has made vaccinations a priority. Ontario has laid out a three-phase plan outlining when and who will be vaccinated over the next few months, based on vaccine supply.

Phase 1 should be completed by the end of March 2021, with approximately 1.5 million people vaccinated, including health care workers.

Phase 2 will begin in April 2021, when another 7.5 million people will be vaccinated by the end of June.

Phase 3 will begin in late summer, and will be optional for anyone who wants to get a vaccine.

This is consistent with our expectation for herd immunity within the next six months. So far, more than 14,000 people have already received their first shot of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. Every person vaccinated is required to receive two doses, 21 days apart.

We look forward to a robust Spring 2021 for the international education industry. Stay tuned for more good news!
